Named for the mills that produced the barley on the River Bush, the first Bushmills distillery dates back to the 1780s. However, a Royal License was granted to a local landowner to distil whiskey in 1608 - thus legitimizing its claim to be the oldest legal distillery in the world. When Irish Distillers bought the distillery in 1972, it meant they controlled all the Irish whiskey production at that time. The distillery is now owned by Jose Cuervo.
Available for the first time in Alberta, the Bushmills 12 Year Old Single Malt Whiskey is a full-bodied, deep amber whiskey that is both complex and approachable. The whiskey is triple-distilled from 100% malted barley and matured for a minimum of 11 years in former sherry casks and bourbon casks, before combining and finishing for 6-9 months in Marsala wine casks, creating a whiskey rich in dried fruit and nut flavors.
Nose: Complex but approachable: strawberry and cream with freshly baked raisin oatmeal cookies.
Palate: Creme brulee, citrus and banana bread and a hint of tobacco leaf.
Finish: Short but smooth. Vanillans linger slightly.
