Gordon & MacPhail has almost legendary status in the world of Scotch whisky, with four generations of the Urquhart family heading up the business from its base in Elgin. The Distillery Label range celebrates the long-standing relationship Gordon & MacPhail has with many Scottish distilleries and showcases historical label designs. In the mid-20th century, the majority of any distillery’s production likely went into blends. But at the same time, Gordon & MacPhail released single malt bottlings for these distilleries, including Mortlach. The Mortlach distillery was founded 1823 when the Excise Act was passed, making it legal to distill whisky in Scotland. Mortlach was, in fact, the first legal distillery in Dufftown and is named after the ancient parish where the town is located.
Bottler's Notes:
Nose: Rich and full; Sherry and orange marmalade notes combine with stewed dates and prunes. Underlying herbal aromas surface and transform into brown sugar with gentle toffee highlights.
Palate: Pronounced Sherry influences join crème brûlée, orange marmalade, sultana, and raisin flavours. Hints of mature oak appear whilst an aniseed edge underscores dark chocolate notes.
Finish: Medium with lingering charred oak and cocoa powder.
