Named for the mills that produced the barley on the River Bush, the first Bushmills distillery dates back to the 1780s. However, the Royal Licence to distil whiskey was granted to a local landowner in 1608, thus legitimising its claim to be the oldest legal distillery in the world. When Irish Distillers bought the distillery in 1972, it meant they controlled all Irish whiskey production at that time. The distillery is now owned by Jose Cuervo.
The very pinnacle of Irish whiskey, Bushmills Single Malt Whiskey 21 year old, is aged for a minimum of 19 years in former Oloroso Sherry and bourbon-seasoned casks, then married and transferred into Madeira casks for a further two years of ageing and maturation.
Awarded ‘Best Irish Single Malt 2013’ and a rare 96 points from Whisky Advocate, it has a huge depth that interweaves dried fruit flavours with spicy, aromatic maltiness, subtle nutty raisin notes, and a rich finish that seemingly never ends.
Nose: Warm caramel, honey, spiced mulled wine.
Palate: Figs, roasted chestnuts, raisins and papaya
Finish: Syrupy tobacco leaves.
