American ex-pat Hiram Walker built the Walkerville Distillery in Windsor Ontario in 1858 and began selling his 'Hiram Walker's Club Whisky' in the finer Detroit Gentlemen's Clubs shortly thereafter. The popularity of his whisky angered American producers - who banded together and forced the US government to pass a law requiring the country of origin be placed on the labels of all non-American whiskies. Hence the name 'Canadian Club' was born.
When U.S. spirits-maker Beam was acquired by Japan’s Suntory it also acquired the well-known Canadian Club brand which was in Beam’s stable. However, Suntory already owned Alberta Distillers which is a premium source of Canadian rye whisky. After much careful experimentation with this Alberta source stock by the Beam-Suntory craft makers in Kentucky, a new straight rye whisky was born – under the popular CC label.
Nose: Very soft, nonthreatening grain, with a sweet envelope of vanilla, bubblegum, and honeysuckle. Hints of acetone (nail polish remover) highlights its youthfulness.
Palate: Creamy mouth feel. Ethanol and heat initially, unexpected given its ABV of 40%. The palate offers sweet grains and a teasing of jammy stone fruits,
Finish: Short. Vanilla sweet and floral, with more honeysuckle and some orange blossom. Pleasant and not bitter, but quick.
