Established as a grocery business in 1895 in the heart of Scotland’s Speyside region, Gordon & MacPhail originally curated all manner of groceries from around the world such as teas, coffees, wines and whisky. Their appreciation of the rich tapestry of flavours they encountered led the founders, James Gordon & Alexander MacPhail, to seek out and complement this varied stock with fine produce in the form of Speyside’s many and varied single malt whiskies.
Glen Elgin was the last distillery built during the 1890 boom years, completed in 1898. The renowned architect Charles Doig famously predicted it would be the last built in Speyside for fifty years; remarkably, his statement was accurate as the next distillery to be constructed was Glen Keith in 1958.Until 1950, Glen Elgin Distillery was entirely operated and illuminated by paraffin; all machinery was powered by a paraffin engine and a water turbine. Keeping the lights burning was, quite literally, a full time job! Today, Glen Elgin runs six stills and is one of only a handful of distilleries to use old-fashioned worm tub condensers.
