Torabhaig became the second distillery on the Isle of Skye, and the first since Talisker in 1830, to be granted a license to distill. Planning for the distillery began in 2002 and the first distillation took place in 2017. The distillery is located near the town of Teangue and some of the out buildings were built using stone from the Caisteal Chamuis (also known as Knock or Cnoc Castle) dating back to 1630 and Clan MacDonald.
Torabhaig Allt Gleann Single Malt is the first release in The Legacy Series. 2017 is named after the year the spirit first flowed from the stills. This expression uses Concerto barley exclusively and the spirit phenolic content of the barley is 55-60ppm but that is reduced to a whisky phenolic content of 16ppm prior to aging in first fill bourbon barrels.
Nose: Earthy peat smoke, fresh shortbread, lemon zest and ocean brine.
Palate: Bold peat with a creamy, oily weightiness. Roasted chestnuts and a touch of medicinal-tinged heather.
Finish: Medium finish with orchard fruits, vanilla and big hits of peat smoke. Briny sea spray lingers.
