Located on the threshold of Speyside just east of the town of Huntly, the Glendronach distillery is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland.
Founded by James Allardice in 1826 this distillery nurtured a sense of “family” right from the start with all the workers (including the excise man) living in houses on the property. During the 1830s the distillery fell into neglect and was eventually taken over by one of the partners – Walter Scott. From there the distillery passed through the hands of several owners, Glendronach was finally moth-balled in 1996 but revived in 2008 by South African interests who eventually sold the property to the current owners, Brown Foreman (Jack Daniels), in 2016. The one constant throughout the distillery’s long and distinguished existence has been the use of Oloroso and Pedro Ximinez casks that give Glendronach a characteristic sweetness and beautiful red hue. Always a top choice for blenders, Glendronach single malts are also eagerly sought by those who prefer a sherried whisky with some weightiness. With Master Blender Rachel Barrie now at the helm we expect even greater things from this iconic distillery.
