the mannochmore distillery was constructed in 1971 to meet the demands of a whisky boom, the ensuing wane in demand saw the distillery
mothballed from 1985 – 1989. built on the same grounds as the glenlossie distillery, the two distilleries would trade off using the same staff – each distilling for a year at a time with a year break. however, in 2008, each distillery started distilling year-round with their own staff. the distillery output of 4.5 million litres is generally used to support the diageo’s lines of blended scotch, most notably the haig and the dimple brands. mannochmore rarely issues “distillery bottlings” but in the 1990s the two most famous (or infamous) were the 12 year old flora & fauna release and the controversial loch dhu – the “black whisky” (it is generally conceded that an over-enthusiastic use of spirit caramel accounted for the pitch black hue).
