Talisker

Talisker

After purchasing the land in 1825 on the Isle of Skye, Talisker’s founders, brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill became classic 'Clearance Landlords' by attempting to replace the exisitng subsistence farmers with more profitable sheep farming. Another of the MacAskill’s money-making schemes was distilling and in 1830, they opened their Talisker distillery in Carbost using the cleared populace as its workforce but this proved unsuccessful. After a series of owners, Talisker was bought by a group of distillers that eventually became United Distillers Ltd - now know as Diageo. The distillery runs a 5 still set up including small, plain stills for the secondary spirit run. As well, it is one of the few remaining distilleries in Scotland to continue using 'worm tubs' for condensing the spirit.
