Founded in 1964 in the heart of the Speyside whisky region – inside the picturesque Glenlivet Estate – the distillery is named after the nearby village of Tomintoul which is the highest village in the Scottish Highlands. The natural environment, fresh air and pure water all add to the uniquely smooth and mellow character. Initially the distillery had one wash still and one spirit still but when the distillery was sold to new owners in 1973, the production capacity was doubled to 3.3 million litres with the addition of two new stills.
