The original Benromach distillery was built in 1898 on land rented from whisky legend Alexander Edward, and it took two years before the distillery began making spirit. However, it closed almost at once and passed through a number of hands, before it was bought in 1993 as a silent, gutted shell by Speymalt Whisky Distributors (Gordon & MacPhail). The new owners undertook a 5 year renovation/refitting and released their first 10 year flagship whisky in 2009.
Cask #305 - Bottled for the Caledonian Bar in Toronto this limited release (219 bottles) was distilled on June 10, 2013, aged in a first fill Sherry hogshead and bottled on June 28, 2023.
Nose: Rich, elegant nose with dark chocolate, cherries, citrus zest and a hint of chili spice.
Palate: Chocolate carries through from the nose but there is a tannic, drying component added. Thinner, lighter mouthfeel that expected, but a couple of drops of water definitely rounds any sharp edges and tames this cask strength expression.
Finish: AS expected, the finish is long but there is an effervescent quality that is unexpected.
