The Glen Grant Distillery was founded in 1840 in the town of Rothes by brothers John and James Grant – two former illegal distillers and
smugglers. The decision to get a license and go legitimate was due, in part, to the fact that all the basic ingredients for whisky making were close at hand (plentiful clean water, fields of barley, access to a nearby sea port). By the time both founders had passed in 1872, the reins of the distillery were turned over to James’ son, James the Younger, an ingenious inventor, a charismatic entertainer and an unconventional world traveler. He was the first person in the Scottish Highlands to own a car and Glen Grant distillery was the first get electric lighting.
