The brand was founded in 1879 by the brothers Isaac Wolf Bernheim and Bernhard Bernheim. Issac Wolf (I.W.) Harper (named after a horse
trainer in the area) was produced in the Bernheim Distilleries in Shively and Louisville Kentucky - properties that are now owned by Heaven Hill. The brand remained strongly profitable right through Prohibition thanks to a license that allow the distillery to produce 'medicinal' alcohol but during the bourbon downturn of the 1970s/80s, the brand all but disappeared from the North American Market. But with the upturn in bourbon in the 2010s, brand owner Diageo re-introduce the brand in 2015 ... likely sourcing this iconic liquid from the Barton 1792 Distillery.
